Let's Get Dirty! The Benefits of Getting Your Hands in the Dirt

“There’s something about getting your hands in the soil.”

E.A. Bucchianeri

Think back to when you were small. The best days that you  remembered were probably spent outside getting dirty.

While most of us don’t have lush outdoor gardens you can still get the same effect repotting your plants or starting an indoor herb garden.

Here are Three Benefits to Getting Your Hands Dirty:

It is a symphony for the senses

When you're tending to the earth and soil, you're mostly likely to be outside. Whether it's in a garden, or on a patio, you’re enjoying the breeze and connecting with the earth. You are taking in sounds of the birds, and feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin. Getting a healthy dose of vitamin D is great for your mood!

It's Great Mind and Body Therapy

Research has found that soil contains a bacteria called Mycobacterium vaccae which can aid in boosting your immune system, and stimulate serotonin production. Serotonin is that “feel good” chemical that acts like a natural antidepressant.  Mycobacterium vaccae helps reduce our stress levels, fight anxiety, and provides a more relaxed sense of self.  In today’s world who couldn’t use more of that?!

It Beats going to the Gym

Repotting plants, especially the big ones can be as beneficial as both arm and leg day at the gym. As you spend time repotting and re-arranging plants, you’ll be working muscles as you twist, turn, bend and pull.  Have you ever hauled a bag of dirt up a NYC walk up? Baby lemme tell you it's not for the weak!

With the new Spring Season upon us, this is your official invitation to get your hands back in the dirt. If you are feeling hesitant about your abilities on your journey to Plant Parenthood, let's work together!
